5 Ideas to Make the Most of a Small Living Space

1. We have mentioned before that accent walls can really add space to your room. One bright accent wall adjacent to a dark entryway will make any cramped living space instantly more airy. Alternatively, if your room is narrow then play with horizontal stripes to widen it.
2. If you have a small window then extend the curtain rod outwards to allow in more light and trick the eyes into believing there is more space.
3. Incorporate a statement mirror to give the illusion that the room is bigger and make it feel less enclosed. Hanging the mirror higher up on the wall will draw the eye up and trick you into believing that the ceiling is higher than it is.
4. Use clever storage to de-clutter your room and immediately add a sense of space. Beds and sofas with hidden storage space are perfect for this, as are bookcases and ottomans. Any item of furniture that allows you to create extra floor space is ideal. Use vacuum packs to store away clothing and other items that you don’t need right now.
5. Make storage into a feature. There are no rules to say that you can’t go floor to ceiling with storage space so go big! Cutting a bookcase off halfway up the wall will only draw attention to the lack of space. Floating shelves and tall bookcases are ideal for storing all of your pictures, nick-nacks and books. By encouraging you to look upwards you will instantly be distracted from the size of the room.

Small spaces can look and feel great as long as you’re prepared to trick the eye and make the most of the space you have got.
