We have been big fans of the Swoon Worthy blog for a while now. So imagine our excitement when Kimberley agreed to share tips on getting her signature “eclectic boho glam” style with us! Plus we get a sneaky peek around her gorgeous home…
Whenever I’m asked to describe my style, I usually answer with a slightly baffling, “Eclectic Boho Glam”. The first time I answered the question like that, I was half-joking. But when people nodded in agreement, it kind of stuck.
What I love about it is how versatile it really is. The elements involved in this style are rather simple to pull apart but there is a certain amount of confidence you need to pull it successfully together. Here are some of my tips for getting the look (using my own home as an example!).
Let’s start with the Eclectic element of this look. Eclectic style is essentially pulling together items from various different eras and creating a new and exciting look with the resultant mix. While eclectic styling looks easy, it’s actually quite challenging but certainly worth the effort. The trick is to seek commonalities amongst the pieces you have chosen and create cohesion based upon scale, colour, texture and style. The simplest way to achieve this is by reigning in your colour palette – choosing 3 (or 4 if you are brave) and repeating these colours throughout the space. Having a number of neutral pieces will ground the design and create an anchor upon which other colours can act as accents.
Create tension within a room by choosing one or two oversized pieces (more than this and the room may look cluttered or overwhelming). Playing with scale is an often-used trick by interior designers and throwing off that scale with an oversized piece can make a design more interesting and visually dynamic.
Now the Boho element really borrows from the beautiful textures and textiles of the globe. It’s a worldly and comfortable look where pieces from your travels can sit beautifully together, creating a warm and welcoming look. Consider touchable fabrics like velvet in sumptuous shades, woven rugs, textural materials in beautiful patterns alongside lanterns and candles. Don’t be afraid to mix patterns within your colour palette.
To be safe, you may want to choose a single large, medium and small scale pattern to sit harmoniously together. Geometric patterns work beautifully with florals or chinoiserie patterns, tapestry with stripes – just make sure the patterns aren’t too closely related in style, just in colour and you’ll find a beautiful mix that is both tantalising and interesting.
Plants also give a space life and create a wonderful bohemian vibe. Consider mixing leaf types for larger displays – so large leaf plants will sit nicely alongside those with smaller leaves, trailing plants like ivy and those with spiky leaves. Vary the heights and sizes and layer them to create an interesting display.
Finally, to really give the space a bit of glamour, consider mixing warm metals with your look. I adore the look of brass and gold but copper is also a beautiful metal and very trendy at the moment. Adding a few warm metals in the mix contrasts beautifully with the Boho textiles and adds a bit of glamour. Consider a pair of brass candlesticks, a shimmering pendant lamp, or a few accessories in brushed or etched gold to really elevate the space and create a look uniquely your own.
