Style Watch: London Fashion Week SS15 Trends in Your Home

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past couple of weeks, you won’t have failed to notice models, stylists, bloggers and celebrities descending upon our capital city in the name of London Fashion Week.

Sadly, the festivities ended a couple of days ago, so we’re reliving the fun by reading the various media outlets’ opinions on the upcoming trend predictions for next spring.  We’ve taken four key trends and have given them an interior design twist! We’ll be helping you stay ahead of the fashion curve by explaining how to style some of London Fashion Weeks stand-out trends in your home now.

1) Bold & bright colours –

It’s official – colour blocking, clashing and print-mixing are going nowhere. In fact, we spotted bold and bright colours at many of the runway shows this year, including in shows by Burberry, Roksanda Ilincic and Anya Hindmarch. In addition, House of Holland experimented with loud and clashing colours for their SS15 collection too, as did Sibling London (who notably topped their models with giant bright bows!)

clashing brights

Using bold, bright and clashing colours in your home:

This style is décor is probably the most difficult to get right. Experiment with large blocks of colour on walls, find fun printed textiles and accessorise with oversized glass vases and lamps to accentuate key colours.

Don’t be afraid to upcycle old, tired pieces of furniture by painting with bold colours and reupholstering. Add a final splash bold colour by stacking with fun printed cushions.

Not confident about trying bold colours and fun prints in your home makeover? Instead, take inspiration from this image, via interior design blog Liv With Vision:

Using bold colour with a neutral palette in the home

We love how the interior designer has taken a fairly neutral palette (creams, whites, browns) and clashed them with colourful graphic prints and painted furniture to produce a theme that is bold, but not overwhelming. Take a look at our orange Stockholm sofa – a bold choice to pair against a serenely neutral back-drop.

2) Yay, monochrome is here to stay –

After seeing the catwalk lit up with a cacophony of bold and brash clashing colours, I was a little worried that monochrome (our favourite recent trend) was out for the upcoming season! Thankfully, designers including Preen, J.JS LEE, Fashion East and Topshop allayed our fears with their monochrome offerings on the catwalk. It’s worth noting that several designers opted for a number of ‘white on white’ outfits too.

Using monochrome in your home:

This trend is probably the easiest to adapt for your home, it’s very easy to implement. Keep walls white and mix pieces of white and black high gloss furniture. The result is a sleek, clean, modern look.

Typically, with the monochrome theme, you’ll likely want a pop of colour in each room to stop the room feeling bland and boring. Mustard yellow is currently very trendy, as is blush pink – but really, any colour will work.

We just love this bedroom shared by Pippa Jameson Interiors, from George at Asda’s latest home collection:

Pro tip: If you find monochrome too harsh for your home, tone down the theme by using a smoky charcoal grey instead of black – this retro grey armchair is perfect. Also check out this post on Scandinavian style (which makes much of a neutral colour palette)

3) Retro (1960s – 1990s) –

An article from the International Business Times sums up another key trend for next spring, retro:

“If there’s a key lesson we can learn for SS15, it is that 1970s flower power is here in a big way.

House of Holland looked to the era for its collection, with funky floral print worked across shirts, dresses and skirts in brazen tones of red, orange, yellow and green all helping to create the hippie chic vibe.”

I know what you’re thinking – how do we translate this into the home without the room looking as if its been left, forgotten about and not decorated for over fifty years? Here are a couple of our top tips:

Incorporating the ‘retro’ theme into your home:

Plenty of interior designers look backwards for inspiration, so it’s pretty easy to find updated, modern takes on retro prints. For a subtle take on the style, cover a feature wall with a retro-inspired wallpaper, like this citrus-toned geometric print. We’re also a bit in love with this Scandi-influenced dining table.

Pro tip: Get into upcycling and give retro pieces a new lease of life by reupholstering or painting the furniture with contemporary hues.

Finally, retro doesn’t have to mean old! We loves these brand new, modern-and-yet-retro-inspired pieces by SMEG. They are set to give any kitchen an authentic retro vibe!

4) All things fluffy (faux fur & fuzzy trimmings) –

Londoner Hannah Weiland’s recently launched label Shrimps has captured the attention of the media and fashion magazines with its fluffy and fuzzy faux fur pieces. Earlier this month, Shrimps’ SS15 coats were the talk of London Fashion Week too.

While Shrimps dominated all things fluffy at LFW, it’s worth noting that many other brands, including TopShop, sent faux fur pieces down the runway too.

ASOS know their fashion, and they’re predicting colourful faux fur is going to be big next spring. Of course, you don’t have to wait until 2015 – you can incorporate this trend in your home now.

Incorporating the fluffy and fuzzy trend into your home:

We think this trend is definably a case of less is more! Simply select a few bright, bold and fluffy trimmings for your room.  Look out for fluffy faux fur cushions for sitting rooms, blankets for beds and plush throws for sofas.
